Our History

Family Owned for Four Generations

Our company has a tremendously committed and talented staff that is trained to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Staff turnover rates are extremely low at Fremont, so our customers feel good about working with such an experienced, reliable production and packaging team. When people are the priority, quality excels.

History/Timeline

1905 The Fremont Kraut Company is founded by Allen Slessman by combining several small, Great Lakes area sauerkraut companies.

Einstein formulates his Theory of Relativity.

1921 Sauerkraut and sauerkraut juice are touted as health foods.

International Business Machines (IBM) Incorporates.

Frank's Quality Kraut1933 The Fremont Company gains controlling interest of the Frank's Pure Food Company, including two plants in Wisconsin.

King Kong climbs the Empire State Building with Fay Wray.

1945 Founder's son Don Slessman Sr. becomes president of The Fremont Kraut Company; second generation ownership begins.

V-E Day, Victory in Europe (World War II).

1962 The Fremont Company acquires Sharp Canning Company with plants in Rockford and Ohio City, Ohio, placing the Fremont Kraut Company in the tomato and ketchup business.

Cuban Missile Crisis: USSR builds missile bases in Cuba.

Frank's Diced Tomatoes1975 The Fremont Kraut Company buys Bluffton Foods, a Bluffton, Indiana tomato canner, plus the remaining interest in Frank's Pure Foods.

The first desktop computer hits the market.

1976 The Fremont Kraut Company consolidates all businesses under a new name: The Fremont Company.

The Concorde makes supersonic jet travel a reality.

Frank's Form and Fill1976 The Fremont Company is first to bring "Form and Fill" technology from Germany to pack kraut in clear bags. For the first time, sauerkraut can be cross merchandised in various in-store locations. This is still a growing market!

The United States celebrates its Bicentennial.

1984 The Fremont Company bottles millions of gallons of ketchup for private label customers using brand new GAMA plastic technology.

Ronald Reagan is elected to a second term as the President of the United States.

1995 With third generation ownership in place, Mississippi Barbecue branded products are added to The Fremont Company product line.

U.S. Shuttle docks with the Russian Space Station Mir.

1997 Fremont Company converts to a #1 fully recyclable plastic material for its bottled products.

Sauerkraut.com debuts on the World Wide Web!

1999 The fourth generation comes on board with The Fremont Company.

2001 The Fremont Company introduces Frank's Quality Kraut Singles™—the very first single serving of saukerkraut! No mess, no fuss!
